HAR HAR MAHADEV: Return to Shiva with Jahnavi Claire Missingham

Jahnavi Claire Missingham comes to Norwich for two amazing workshops and to help us celebrate our 1 year anniversary…

Claire Missingham (Jahnavi) was originally an award-winning choreographer for movies and commercials and the youngest UK choreographer to run her own dance company, winning the Prince’s Trust Award for youth innovation in 1999.  While still a choreographer in New York, Jahnavi studied at Jivamukti Yoga from  1997-2005, and travelled regularly to Mysore to train in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga directly with Sri Pattabhi Jois from 2000-2009, and has now taught Yoga full-time for 24 years. She was also one of the first teachers to bring Vinyasa Yoga  Teacher Training to the UK in 2009 and has trained hundreds of UK Vinyasa teachers.

She is trained to Level 2 3HO Kundalini Yoga, certified in Jivamukti  Yoga and continues her academic and philosophical studies with the  Ramakrishna Seminary in California, where she has taken her GuruDiksha. She  toured as a private yoga teacher with many clients coming from the film and music industry including actors and musicians such as Natalie Imbruglia, the  Spice Girls, Neve Campbell, Minnie Driver, Katie Puckrick, Danny Huston, among many other well-known celebrities.

What makes Jahnavi Claire Missingham unique is her inspirational fusion of incredibly well-choreographed 3-step asana, detailed use and understanding of esoteric anatomy and A&P, and the use of music as a refined somatic healing resource (not as background noise). Each philosophical class weaves the theme with the physical, and with pranayama, meditation, mantra, lesser-known mudras and well-researched poetry that presumes each student to be intellectually capable of such detail within the Yoga practice.

Since 2007, Claire has written for Yoga Journal in the USA, featuring twice on the cover, in the calendars, and writing numerous sequences and articles for the print magazine with a distribution of over 2million+.

She was also regularly a featured teacher at Yoga Journal conferences in the USA and Asia. She was a  resident teacher at Triyoga in London, UK, for 17 years with a large, loyal following in the UK. Claire has also produced an award-winning Vinyasa Yoga  DVD and Music for Yoga. Claire has featured and written on wellbeing for  Tatler, Grazia and Vogue. She created award-winning Yoga practice TV channels for Sky Television, and was the only non-USA teacher to be invited to be a faculty teacher on Yogaglo, being awarded a Green Card in 2017 for  “extraordinary ability” in the art of teaching Yoga (OB1).

Claire will be returning to a regular London class offering vinyasa classes at Home, a new studio concept housed in the very first Triyoga studio in Primrose Hill

Jahnavi is now a board trustee of Go Dharmic, fulfilling Seva in India and  London, as well as leading and curating cultural Yoga tours in India, partnering with the Taj Hotel Group to keep the roots of Yoga alive in the West.

Workshop 1. HAR HAR MAHADEV: Return to Shiva

Come and experience a workshop with one of the original UK pioneers of Vinyasa Yoga. In this powerful Yogasana class, we invoke the strength and wisdom of Shiva, weaving the garland of Shiv Mantras, YogAsana and Meditation to bring us back to our ultimate great yogi power within. The Tandava is a powerful kriya-like dance that awakens Mahadev within you: giving you access to your devotion and power.

What to expect: Mythical flow sequences, dynamic asana, Kriya (repetitive movements to purify the pranic system) and beautiful mantras.

Stories behind Shiv as the Lord of Meditation Hatha yoga was taught by Shiva to Matsyendranath, not as an outer form of shape but to harness Prana and create inner alignment for meditation.  The Vastasutra Upnishad emphasizes that placing the limbs and spine along certain symmetrical lines is like knowledge of the divine. The Gheranda Samhita is another ancient text that provides detailed instructions on yoga postures, breathing techniques, and other practices. With good alignment, we are honouring the historical context of Yog as well as Raj Yog and Hatha Yog paths of controlling the mind and controlling Prana simultaneously.

Time: 2-4.30pm

Following the workshop, from 5-6pm Jahnavi Claire will be in conversation with Yantra founder and podcast host Abby Hoffmann talking about her life, philosophy of teaching and will answer any questions on yoga, yoga philosophy and more! The talk is free but donations to Go Dharmic would be very welcome.

Cost: £45 (or £80 if booking both)

Sunday Sounds with Rachel Cross

Join Rachel of MyCalminTheCity for another amazing journey into sound. Rachel uses many instruments including crystal bowls to create a healing soundscape for you.

Rachel has been using sound through her yoga practice in the form of mantra and chanting for many years now and started to get really interested in sound as an healing modality in 2018 after spending time in Retreat in Glastonbury. She had a massive clearing in her Throat Chakra that came about on Glastonbury Tor after a group Sound Healing Session using an Alchemical Crystal Singing Bowl. As she stood in St Michaels Tower singing to the Gods & Goddesses, she found she was no longer afraid to sing and use her voice.

Since then, she has been strengthening and exploring using her voice to heal both herself and others through Song, Mantra and Yoga Nidra, as well as learning how to play the Himalayan Singing Bowls, Crystal Singing Bowls, wind gong and other percussive instruments in a therapeutic way.

Time: 4-5pm

Cost: £18/15.30 members

Authentic Flow workshop

Authentic Flow workshop

Join Marie for a 2 hour masterclass exploring the somatic yoga practice and methodology of ‘Authentic Flow’.

Using this approach you will explore the interconnection between the body’s systems — bones, muscles, organs, fluids, fascia, and energy — through movement and awareness. Learning how to connect with the body with an emphasis on sensing, feeling, and moving from your internal attunement.

This style of practice encourages movement to arise organically from deep awareness of these internal sensations, enabling the body to flow naturally and freely — emphasising moving in ways that are true to your unique inner rhythm.

In this approach, there is no "perfect" posture or ideal form; rather, the focus is on listening to your body, trusting its wisdom, and allowing movement and postures to arise effortlessly. In Authentic Flow you are encouraged to engage with the body in a playful and spontaneous way and this approach fosters a creative exploration of movement that allows for authentic self-expression.

This masterclass is perfect for curious yoga students looking to deepen your connection with your body and move in a more organic and embodied way, and for teachers who are interested in teaching and cueing asana from a more embodied approach.

Myofascial Release

You may have heard a lot of buzz about fascia and fascial release practices. Some of it can be very confusing and there is currently a lot of misinformation out there.

Fascia is a fluid weblike substance that connects to everything in your body and creates an information network assisting all bodily functions, movements and especially nervous system response. When we understand how it functions it helps us move and breathe better. Whether using movement or manual therapy we can remove resistance and tension in the body and cultivate a sense of wellbeing, bringing ourselves back to homeostasis.

In this workshop, you'll gain a working knowledge of how fascia works and what to do when it gets 'stuck'. We'll move through a series of simple, yet deeply effective exercises that will leave you feeling at ease in your body and mind.

Julie, who has done years of intensive study with Gary Carter (One of the leading experts in the field of fascial research) is happy to bring this enlightening and informative workshop to Yantra Studio Norwich this December.
